Waterproof Floors

Waterproofing Floors with membranes is one area RIW Limited has been involved in for over 80 years.

When RIW commenced trading in 1921 it specialised in liquid Bitumen membranes. However, the range of waterproof floor membranes now consists of not just liquid bitumen products, but a range of sheet membranes, epoxy and polyurethane liquid membranes, drainage boards and sodium bentonite based products. All these membranes share the same function - providing specifiers, users and clients with safe effective methods of waterproofing their floor structures.

In theory all buildings require a waterproof floor membrane of some kind. In most cases this is at ground level and will consist of either a liquid or sheet applied waterproof floor membrane applied either above or below the slab.

Where basement construction is involved a useful starting point is BS8102. This official document describes the various steps that need to be followed to ensure the waterproof floor and wall membranes provides effective Basement Tanking.

The first step is to determine to what use the basement will be put. BS8102 describes four standards of Basement Tanking, ranging from the lowest which allows some water ingress, to a totally dry environment.

Once the grade has been selected soil conditions need to be determined so an assessment can be made as to what levels and degrees of water pressure the Waterproof Floor and wall membranes will be subjected.

Only when these factors have been considered can the design of the Basement Tanking and the type of materials selected for the floor and wall membranes be decided. Although in theory the selection of Waterproof Floor and wall membranes and design of Basement Tanking sounds a relatively simple task, there are many decisions to be made.
