Damp Proof Courses & Cavity Trays
Damp proof courses and cavity trays are used to prevent moisture from the ground rising into the internal fabric of the structure. They should be installed 150 mm minimum above external ground level and sealed to the general damp proof membrane protecting floor slabs.
Cavity trays are designed to divert water within the cavity wall out through open perpends or weep holes through the external skin. They are usually used above window and door heads and often at intermediate floor levels depending upon the design of the structure. It is good DPC advice and specially important to ensure that cavity trays above basements are carefully installed with fully taped and sealed joints to prevent water bypassing the tanking membrane.
RIW products for damp proof courses and cavity trays include:
RIW Sheetseal 9000 is a traditional polymeric DPC that is supplied in a range of widths that can also be site formed into cavity trays. Standard preformed stop-end, corner and change in level units are available as well as specially fabricated units for specific projects. RIW Sheetseal 9000 is compatible with all RIW tanking and damp proof membranes and utilising these will avoid disputes between manufacturers for this critical element of the design.
